The Sappony living in High Plains have used our land to grow tobacco.
With tobacco as the main subsistence crop, our Indian community
was able to maintain itself and remain self-sufficient for almost
two centuries. More recently, however, our community could no longer
rely on growing the traditional crop of tobacco for its subsistence.
This change has caused our community to shift away from tobacco
and led individuals to gain different skills and occupations. Members
began to work in a number of different occupational fields other
than farming including; education, medical, financial services,
business owners, and technicians. Although many of these trades
have caused tribal members to work outside of the community, strong
ties are maintained.
Because of our close ties to the tobacco crop, we have placed it
in the center of our Tribal insignia.
Also included are corn and wheat, two other significant crops that
have been the base of our subsistence in High Plains.
